Alderney records even stronger gusts of 75mph from Storm Austen.
Storm Austen built from the north-west as forecast, with Guernsey Met recording gusts of 69mph overnight (Friday 23).
The eye of the storm is passing over at dawn meaning more strong winds can be expected until mid morning.
There are trees down in wooded areas like the Talbot Valley but also in urban areas like Collings Road, and tree debris is strewn across most roads.
The west coast is worst affected by the strong winds but the picture below, sent in by a listener, shows the metal roof of Target Tyres peeling off which is well inland.

The advice from police and government is to stay indoors this morning until winds abate at lunchtime.
At a glance, this the way services look this morning:
- All buses are suspended until at least 11am
- The airport will re-open at midday with flights getting away by two, weather permitting
- All passenger and commercial sailings are cancelled
- Large supermarkets are closed until lunchtime
- Some bank branches are closed
- All States schools are closed for the day
- States customer service counters, like Wheadon House, will re-open at midday
- The courts and Greffe are open
- Community nursing visits will take place but may be delayed
- Surgery takes place as scheduled
- Cesspit collections are suspended
