Enhancements planned for Guernsey's second harbour

Improvements include walking and cycling paths, a cafe and children's play area and a marine centre for boat maintenance.

The plans have been put forward by the Guernsey Development Agency (GDA) as interim improvements ahead of the major regeneration of the Bridge and Leale's Yard, and include:

A new marine maintenance hub
Harbour cycling and a walking paths
Making the Vale Castle better suited to outdoor events
A children's play area and better use of the Crocq pier for community get togethers
A bus shelter

Senior politicians in Guernsey have given the GDA the go ahead to prepare the plans, which they will do after consulting with landowners.

Simon Kildahl, who is a non-executive director of the GDA, says the area needs these improvements:

“The Bridge and the surrounding area deserve to be somewhere our community and visitors come to, not just drive through.

"It deserves the same high-quality public amenities, modern infrastructure, and vibrant public spaces enjoyed by St Peter Port.

"There is a significant opportunity to make real positive improvements here and we hope that these new enhancements will be enjoyed by local residents and those that choose to visit the area including tourists.”

Longer term political decisions on where the electricity cable from France may end up, and the future location of a fuel farm, are key to the GDA's plans for Guernsey's two harbours and nearby coast.
