A full-scale sea rescue was launched for a suspected person drowning at Guernsey's Le Gouffre.
Both the St Peter Port Inshore and All-weather lifeboats were launched on Sunday lunchtime (27 March).
The crew got to the scene to find what had been seen floating in the water was a red immersion suit.
The RNLI says it was probably washed off the deck of a commercial vessel in bad weather and that from its condition it had been in the sea for some time.
Once the immersion suit had been identified and recovered, and no further link to an incident reported, both boats were stood down at 1.31pm and returned to the station.
“In these scenarios we would always treat this is a distress phase mission due to the initial description of the floating object.
Our operators and assets responded very promptly to the call, and fortunately in this case there was no life at risk. We thank the member of public for their correct call to Coastguard and would always encourage the public if they have any concerns about possible risk to life to always contact us." - Guernsey Coastguard.
