Museum Upgrade To Host High-Value Art

Guernsey Museum at Candie will be closed next week so an air handling system can be installed to keep valuable artworks cool.

The museum will be shut from 4 -10 July so preparations can be made for new air handling equipment can be put in.

Some exhibitions - such as the planned Renoir 2023 one - demand specific environmental conditions such as consistent cool temperatures and humidity to prevent damage to the high-value artworks.

Museum bosses say, though the timing is unfortunate, the work will improve facilities in the long term.

“We need to close the entire museum for a week next month to allow the bulk of the work to be carried out. T

he temporary galleries will remain closed for a further two weeks, however that should only have a limited effect. We know the timing isn’t the best, but the improved equipment will present us with some really exciting opportunities, so we want to seize the chance while we have it." - Helen Glencross, Head of Heritage Services, Culture & Heritage.

The Brick City exhibition, which features landmarks made of lego, will close on Thursday (30 June) and Fragments of History, Figments of the imagination by Mark Windsor will close on 3 July.

The cafe and shop will remain open.

The permanent galleries will be open again from 11th July and the Discovery Room from the 26 July.
