There will continue to be a significant emergency service presence in Alderney while a suspected murder investigation continues.
Guernsey Police were alerted to an incident around the south-west cliffs of Alderney just past 11pm last night (27 September).
A search and rescue operation was launched.
Around 4.30am, a woman's body was found in the water at the bottom of the cliffs.
A 44-year-old man remains in police custody after receiving hospital treatment.
Detective Superintendent Jonathan Bancroft gave an update outside Guernsey Police HQ this afternoon, during which he asked the public to refrain from speculation while enquiries continue.
"Alderney is a small and close-knit community, and we recognise the significant impact an incident of this nature will have.
"Speculation can cause additional distress to those directly affected and has the potential to interfere with an ongoing investigation."
Anyone who has information which may assist the investigation is asked to contact Guernsey Police.
