Former CI Co-op boss awarded more than £3m

The former boss of the Channel Islands Co-op has been awarded more than £3 million from his ex-employer.

Jersey Royal Court has awarded Colin Macleod damages and lost past and future earnings following a personal injury claim.

The court has ruled three Co-op directors 'acted in bad faith' against Mr Macleod, who was the society's CEO for a decade before his dismissal in 2020.

He alleged he was the subject of bullying and a smear campaign. The judgement says the company failed in its duty of care.

It has awarded him £40,000 in 'general damages' for the psychological injury, including £10,000 for 'loss of congeniality of employment' because of the pride and purpose he enjoyed in his role.

For lost past earnings, a sum of £1,478,031 to the end of 2024 was being sought.

The court said they should be calculated up to the end of 2025.

It further concluded he should received future loss of earnings, applying the same calculations, until he reaches the age of 60 - in January 2030.

Following the publishing of the court's decision, the Channel Islands Co-op sent this email to its members.

A message from our CEO

Dear Member,

I am writing to provide an update on the ongoing legal proceedings involving our former CEO, Colin MacLeod.

You may read in the media, or hear from other sources, that the Royal Court has published its decision in the case brought against the Channel Islands Coop by former CEO Colin MacLeod. In its judgment the Court has ruled in favour of Mr MacLeod.

Whilst we acknowledge the judgment, with respect, we do not agree with the findings and, after liaising closely with our insurers and legal advisers, consider there are substantial grounds for appeal. We therefore intend to challenge the decision through the appeal process.

I am sure you will appreciate that, as the matter remains live before the courts, we cannot say any more at this moment in time.
