Plans for UK homeware store The Range to open on the Motor Mall site have been rejected.
The retailer wants to trade from on la Grande Route de St Jean. It submitted an application last summer saying the store would create 50 jobs.
There are 170 The Range stories nationwide, selling furniture, DIY and art supplies.
Last June, a spokesman from the company said: “Jersey is a market we’ve been looking at for some time and we’re very excited to be submitting this Planning Application. Our ethos has always been to bring our customers great quality products at the most competitive prices, drawing together everything needed to create beautiful homes.”
The planning application included widening the road to create a feeder lane to the new store, new entrance and exits, wider pavements and a bus shelter.
Officers have refused permission on the grounds it doesn't align with planning policy and would increase traffic in the area.
Jersey Business had written a letter of support for the proposal on the basis of it providing an economic boost, but the Chamber of Commerce opposed it for potentially diverting trade away from shops in St Helier.
Jacksons, which owns the site, had said it wanted to move all its car sales and servicing business to its airport road site.
