A bus gate is being created where the Esplanade meets Route de la Liberation to give westbound buses a quicker, priority-only route.
Roadworks that are expected to last ten months begin today at the bottom of Gloucester Street.
The Infrastructure department is creating a 'bus gate' to give westbound buses a quicker, priority-only route.
It aims to reduce congestion on Castle Street by redirecting buses along the Esplanade.
The government says the works also include a drainage upgrade, road resurfacing, footway improvements and new bus shelters and bicycle stands.
Traffic disruption isn't expected until January next year, when Phase 2 of the project begins and a lane closure will be necessary.
The work is expected to be completed in August 2026.

Minister for Infrastructure, Constable Andy Jehan, said: “I look forward to the project getting underway so that islanders can benefit from the improvements this will bring.”
Liberty Bus Director, Kevin Hart, said: “We are extremely excited with the Western Bus Gate development and anticipate this will take up to 5 minutes off journeys at peak times heading west when the scheme is completed.
